Whistler really began to come alive way back in the mid to late 1800s when the British surveyed the area with the help of the Royal Navy. At first, the area was known as London Mountain since the place was cloaked in fog that reminded the Brits of home... but thanks to a little local chap called the hoary marmot, the area took on the name of Whistler, since the little critters were always making their distinctive call in among the peaks. Not much happened for a while on the old date scene until some folk turned up late in the 19th century to make a trail through the mountains; this hooked up Lillooet through Pemberton and the Burrard Inlet through Squamish and down to the Seymour River, and finished up in 1877 as a cattle drive.

Trappers and prospectors followed, setting up little camps which started to link up, and eventually got their own social hub in 1914 in the form of the now legendary Rainbow Lodge.
